Common Questions About Drift Water Charters

Find clear answers to popular questions about our South Padre Island fishing trips, so you’re ready for your adventure.

How do I book a fishing trip with Drift Water Charters?

You can reserve your spot by calling Captain Joaquin Pena directly. He can be reached at 956-929-3000. He likes to handle his reservations by phone and this will give you a chance to get acquainted with your captain before your trip. We ask that you please leave a message if you do not initially get in touch with him as he may be out on the water with clients. He’s very good about returning calls and trust us, the small wait you may possibly have will be worth it!

What should I bring with me on my guided fishing trip?

We want you to be comfortable and prepared! We recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses – polarized are best for seeing into the water, comfortable clothing suitable for the weather (the weather can change in an instant on the bay), any personal medications you require, and drinks and snacks. We do provide water and some snacks and have a cooler you may put your drinks in (please, no glass containers allowed). Don’t forget your camera to capture those memorable catches! We’ll provide all the necessary fishing equipment, bait, and tackle.

Do I need a fishing license to fish in the Laguna Madre Bay?

Yes, a valid Texas fishing license with a saltwater stamp is required for anyone 17 years of age or older. You can easily purchase a license online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website before your trip, or at many local tackle shops in South Padre Island. Captain Pena can also point you in the right direction to obtain one.

Are your guided fishing trips suitable for beginners or children?

Absolutely! Our guided fishing trips are perfect for anglers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros- and children! Our captain is patient and enjoys teaching newcomers the basics of fishing, including casting techniques, bait selection, and how to identify different species. Captain Pena is especially known for his patience and expertise in working with children as well. We’ll tailor the trip to your experience level and help you have a successful and enjoyable day on the water.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my scheduled fishing trip?

Your safety is our top priority! Captain Pena closely monitors weather conditions. If the weather is deemed unsafe (e.g., high winds, thunderstorms), we will reschedule your trip at no additional cost. We’ll communicate with you proactively about any potential weather-related changes and work with you to find a suitable alternative date. We want to ensure you have the best possible experience when you are on the water.

What kind of fish can I expect to catch on a guided fishing trip in the Laguna Madre Bay?

We primarily target speckled trout, redfish, and black drum in the Laguna Madre Bay. Depending on the season and conditions, you might also encounter sheepshead, flounder, and various other species. Your guide will use their expertise to put you on the best possible fishing opportunities!

What is included in the price of a private guided fishing trip?

Our private guided fishing trips include the services of a licensed and experienced fishing guide, all necessary fishing equipment (rods, reels, bait, and tackle), fuel, and ice. We also clean and fillet your catch at the end of the trip. The price does not include your fishing license, or gratuity for the guide (customary 15-20% if you enjoyed your trip).

How many people can we have on your boat?

The maximum amount of people allowed on these types of boats according to Texas law is 6 including the captain.

What’s the typical water depth in Laguna Madre Bay around South Padre Island?

Laguna Madre Bay is generally quite shallow, which is part of what makes it such a productive ecosystem. The average depth is only about 3-4 feet. So – if you fall overboard, just stand up! However, there are deeper channels and areas dredged for navigation, which can reach depths of 10 feet or more.

Besides fish, what other wildlife might I see while fishing in Laguna Madre Bay?

Laguna Madre Bay is filled with wildlife! Keep an eye out for various bird species, including herons, egrets, pelicans, and shorebirds. You might also spot dolphins playing in the bay, or jumping and running with us alongside the boat. Other common sights include crabs, shrimp, and various invertebrates that make up the base of the food chain. You may even see the occasional alligator in the backwaters!
