The Laguna Madre Bay around South Padre Island is a fishing paradise! Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, the shallow, nutrient-rich waters teem with a variety of exciting species. There are many species you will find while fishing in the Laguna Madre.
Here’s a rundown of the 20 most common and popular fish you’ll be hoping to reel in:
- Spotted Seatrout (Speckled Trout): The Laguna Madre Legend
Spotted Seatrout, or Speckled Trout as they’re often called, are the undisputed kings of the Laguna Madre. They’re aggressive feeders, readily taking live shrimp, artificial lures, and topwater plugs. Big “gator trout” are the ultimate prize, often found in deeper grass flats. - Redfish (Red Drum): The Inshore Powerhouse
Redfish are another Laguna Madre staple and one of my favorite fish to eat. Known for their bronze color and distinctive black spot near the tail, they’re strong fighters and can grow to impressive sizes. Look for them around oyster reefs, grass beds, and shorelines. - Flounder: The Master of Disguise
Flounder are flatfish that camouflage themselves on the bottom, waiting to ambush unsuspecting prey. They’re a fun challenge to catch, requiring a slow, deliberate presentation of your bait. Gigging for flounder at night is also a popular activity. - Black Drum: The Bottom-Dwelling Bruiser
Black Drum are powerful fish that inhabit the deeper channels and flats of the Laguna Madre. They’re often caught near bridges and jetties, feeding on crustaceans and shellfish. They can grow to impressive sizes, offering a serious fight. - Sheepshead: The Convict Fish
Sheepshead are easily recognizable by their black and white vertical stripes, earning them the nickname “convict fish.” They’re notorious bait stealers, requiring a quick hookset. They’re found around docks, pilings, and oyster reefs. - Gafftopsail Catfish: The Whisker King
While not always a target species, Gafftopsail Catfish are common in the Laguna Madre and can provide some exciting action. They’re easily identified by their long, flowing dorsal fin. They’ll take a variety of baits, including shrimp and cut bait. - Sand Seatrout: The Speckled Trout’s Cousin
Often mistaken for their more popular cousin, the Spotted Seatrout, Sand Seatrout are smaller and typically found in shallower waters. They’re still fun to catch and contribute to the overall fishing experience. - Croaker: The Bait Stealer
Croaker are a common catch in the Laguna Madre, known for their croaking sound. While not a prized gamefish, they are fun to catch and can be used as live bait for larger predators. - Pompano: The Surf Runner

Ladyfish are known for their acrobatic leaps and fast runs. They are commonly found in the Laguna Madre and are a fun catch for anglers using light tackle. Hint: They are also “candy” for redfish. - Hardhead Catfish: The Pesky Bait Thief
Hardhead Catfish are abundant in the Laguna Madre and can be a nuisance to anglers targeting other species. However, they are still a part of the ecosystem and can provide some action. - Gulf Kingfish: The Surf Dweller
Gulf Kingfish are commonly found in the surf and nearshore waters of the Laguna Madre. They are a fun catch for anglers using light tackle and can be a tasty addition to a fish fry. - Spanish Mackerel: The Speedy Predator

Several species of sharks can be found in the Laguna Madre, including Blacktip Sharks and Bonnethead Sharks. They are apex predators and offer an exciting challenge for anglers looking for a thrill. - Blue Crab: The Crustacean Delight
